Broadway Electrical Co. Completes Electrical Construction of 120,000 s/f Spangler Center

BOSTON, MA – Broadway Electrical Company, Inc. of Boston has completed the three million dollar electrical construction of the new 120,000 square foot Spangler Center at the Harvard Business School on Western Avenue in Allston, MA. The project was awarded and overseen by Harvard Business School’s Department of Construction and Planning.

Designed to be the center of campus activity at the internationally acclaimed business school, the Spangler Center is a multi-use facility for students, faculty, and executive education participants. The handsome "Georgian collegiate" style building, was architecturally designed to harmonize with the other buildings on the Harvard Business School campus by the architectural firm Robert A.M. Stern Architects of New York City.

The facility features a 350-seat auditorium, meeting rooms, and administrative offices for the MBA program. It also houses a Harvard COOP bookstore, a post office, a printing and duplicating facility, a travel agency, dining room and a grill and pub for students and faculty. The multi-purpose auditorium is utilized as a venue for Harvard Business School guest speakers and other special on-campus events including films.

Highlighting Broadway’s sophisticated electrical installations are a state-of-the-art wireless communication system, a card access camera security system, a computerized mailbox distribution system with LED strip indicators, and an audio/visual dimming system that interconnects meeting rooms on one system. The facility’s interior lighting features custom chandeliers and sconces that beautifully accent the architectural detail of the new building.

At peak construction, Broadway Electrical’s on-site project team included 25 electricians from IBEW Local 103. Project general foreman, Peter Caratelli, discussed Broadway’s ability to meet certain of the demands of the electrical fit up, saying, "Coordinating aspects of this project was a challenge in that there were numerous tight areas which needed to accommodate extensive wiring for the various electrical systems."

Broadway Electrical Company completed its construction of the Spangler Center in January, and the facility has been open to students and faculty since the beginning of the year. The fast track project took little more than one year to complete, and came in on budget.

In commenting on Broadway Electrical’s electrical work at the new building, David Moffatt, Chief of Operations at Harvard Business School, said, "I commend the contributions that Peter Caratelli made to the Spangler Center project at Harvard Business School. Beginning on his first day on the property, Peter led all sub-contractors and the Berry Company through to the completion of a very difficult project, on the owner’s critical completion date. By his example, many critical components of the work were accomplished with a minimum of duplicated or wasted effort, and difficult areas of mechanical-electrical coordination were resolved."

Moffatt continued, "When, near the opening date, it became clear that critical interior light fixtures would not be delivered in time, Peter’s creativity and the support provided by Broadway’s administrative and management staff enabled the project to be issued a temporary certificate of occupancy and open for business. For this extra effort, Harvard will be eternally grateful."

The introduction of the new Spangler Center reestablishes the direction and intent of the original campus of Harvard Business School, which was built from 1923 to 1926. The Spangler Center is named for Harvard Business School alumnus and prominent businessman, C. Dickson Spangler, of Chapel Hill, NC. Mr. Spangler’s generous donation to the school was instrumental in the funding of the project.

In providing the elaborate electrical installations for the facility, Broadway Electrical worked closely with the electrical engineering firm of Bard, Rao + Athanas (BR+A) Consulting Engineers, Inc. of Boston, MA and William A. Berry & Son, Inc. of Danvers, MA, the project’s general manager.
